MONTEREY POP
Thursday, July 2, 2009 at 4:30, 6:30, and 8:30pm.

SCREENING IN HIGH-DEFINITION AND 5.1 SURROUND SOUND!

“QUITE SIMPLY ONE OF THE BEST ROCK CONCERT FILMS EVER, thanks not only to some great performances (towards the end, with Joplin, Redding, Hendrix, things really start cooking), but also to the way it sums up the spirit of the times (the Summer of Love) while never sentimentalising. Hang on to the end, however, when a small Indian man appears nursing a sitar: Ravi Shankar’s exhilarating twenty-minute finale is the best thing in the entire movie.” – Geoff Andrew, Time Out London

Scene Photo Before there were Woodstock and Woodstock, there were Monterey Pop and Monterey Pop, D.A. Pennebaker’s enormously influential portrait of the music festival that ushered in the Summer of Love. More than 200,000 souls gathered on the California coast, June 16-18, 1967, for performances by the likes of Jefferson Airplane, Simon and Garfunkel, The Who, The Mamas and the Papas, and Eric Burdon and the Animals.

But the festival was finally owned by two newcomers: a psychadelic guitarist already a legend in British rock circles, Jimi Hendrix, and a young blues singer out of Texas, Janis Joplin. Pennebaker beautifully captures the rawness of these career-defining performances, in an unforgettable document of a cultural movement on the verge revitalized with a newly enhanced soundtrack.
