Umberto D.
Vittorio De Sica, Italy, 1952, 89m

An almost destitute retiree, Umberto Domenico Ferrari (Carlo Battisti), and his only real companion, his dog Flike, go on a desperate and tragic search for the money to pay his rent. De Sica’s masterpiece of character and mood is a powerful broadside against what he saw as the unforgivable neglect of Italy’s elderly. Yet the film is never dogmatic or pamphleteering: its cast of protesting pensioners and quiet passersby all are caught in the same, unforgiving bureaucracy.
