Scenes from

Leave Her to Heaven
Series: The 45th New York Film Festival [Sep 28 - Oct 14 2007]
Director: John M. Stahl, Country: USA, Release: 1945, Runtime: 110

An absolutely stunning psychological-noir, shot in vibrantly beautiful Technicolor (by the great Leon Shamroy), with the gorgeous Gene Tierney as a kind of ultimate femme fatale. Tierney is Ellen, an apparently placid woman who willfully and methodically destroys anyone who stands between her and her beloved husband Richard (Cornel Wilde). Some kind of alchemical fusion occurred between Tierney’s exquisite features, Shamroy’s color palette and director John Stahl’s feeling for melodrama, because Ellen is a virtually elemental figure of alluring menace. There are genuine visions in this film, including Ellen scattering of her father’s ashes on horseback, that you’ll never forget. Presented in a newly restored 35mm print.

American Express and The Film Foundation present Drums Along the Mohawk and Leave Her to Heaven as part of the Preservation Screening Program, In Glorious Technicolor. The Preservation Screening Program has been created by American Express and The Film Foundation to provide public access to motion pictures that have been preserved/restored with funding from the foundation. Through this new program, today's moviegoers are connecting with film art and culture of the past, developing appreciation for our shared cinematic history and highlighting the importance of film preservation.
